DOE Announces $900 Million to Accelerate the Deployment of Next-Generation Light-Water Small Modular Reactors
July,12 2024
As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to $900 million in funding to support the initial U.S. deployments of Generation III+ Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies. This initiative, bolstered by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to strengthen the domestic nuclear industry, create good-paying jobs, and achieve ambitious clean energy goals. DOE anticipates offering up to $800 million for first-mover teams and $100 million for fast follower deployments to address gaps in the nuclear industry, with funding solicitations expected in late summer/fall of 2024.
Nuclear power, the nation’s largest source of carbon-free electricity, employs nearly 60,000 jobs directly and hundreds of thousands more indirectly. The Biden-Harris Administration’s push to grow the nuclear sector marks the largest sustained effort in nearly five decades. DOE estimates the U.S. will need 700-900 GW of additional clean, firm capacity to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, with nuclear power playing a critical role in meeting this demand, supporting economic benefits for impacted communities, and reducing deployment costs.
SMRs, due to their small footprint, modular design, and factory-based construction, can be deployed in various settings and scaled up to meet larger demands or complement renewables. The DOE’s funding aims to support meaningful community and labor engagement, invest in quality jobs, advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and ensure that 40% of the benefits from federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities. Learn more about these initiatives and upcoming opportunities on the DOE’s Gen III+ SMR engagement webpage and through informational webinars and Industry Day events.
